The event’s objectives are to be:

Artists working in Live Art, contemporary performance, time-based media and interdisciplinary arts are now invited to submit proposals. Work can be in any relevant artform/medium, though some live presence is desirable.

Spaces available (please see document below)

• Contact is a big multi-space building which has just undergone a major capital expansion and refurbishment.
• Spaces available include a theatre, a black box studio, a multi-purpose events space, a large + a smaller rehearsal rooms, a meeting room, a café-bar, various landings + alcoves.
• For daytime work Bar, First Floor Foyer, Meetings Room, Space 1 Lobby, Space 3 + Space 4 and possibly Space 0.
• For evening work Space 1, Space 2 + Space 0. Evening show type work max 20 mins. 

The Space Information below outlines the main rooms, but there may be other small areas – which we might put work in. If you are looking for a type of space not listed, please select “Other – public” or “Other – private” and describe the kind of space you want and we’ll see if anything fits!

Please note: Emergency 2022 will offer an honorarium of £150 per piece selected, to cover fees/expenses. For artists coming from beyond Greater Manchester we may be able to offer an additional discretionary contribution to travel. Proposals needing a higher level of budget, or additional access costs please talk to us via emergency@habmcr.org; before applying.

Selection process & criteria:

Final selection will be by a panel from hÅb and Contact on the basis of suitability to artistic parameters and technical and logistical feasibility.

• There will be a technical meeting either in person or remotely on Sat 17 September.

A live, socially-distanced walkthrough event for durational and/or looping live art and contemporary performance.

Necessarily, Emergency 2020 will be somewhat different. A socially-distanced, walk-through event for durational and looping performance. Small booked audiences will be guided through the building in gallery fashion, pausing en route to watch the work. 

So Emergency 2020 is looking for durational, performance installation; looping + intervention-based live works that can run over a minimum period of 4 hours. 

We realise this won't be for everyone as the ask is constrained by the current circumstances and we have to put the caveat on that it might just not happen - but we really think we should give it a damn good go! Please also bear in mind, this will be subject to lifting of local lockdown in Manchester.

*By durational we mean work that unfolds over its time period, by looping we mean short work that can repeat over and over (suggested max loop 10 mins).

Technical provision will be basic and largely imported for the event. 

Spaces available include a black box studio, a large + a smaller rehearsal rooms, a meeting room, a café-bar (not operating), various landings + alcoves. For Emergency 2020 we are specifically looking for durational, performance installation; looping + intervention-based live works. The audience will be taken on a one way journey through the building in timed slots - estimated journey time 75mins.  

Please note: Emergency 2020 will offer an honorarium of £100 per piece selected, to cover fees/expenses. If your proposal need a higher level of budget, or additional access costs please talk to us via emergency@habmcr.org before applying.

New for 2020, Emergency StopGap is a small informal platform for live art: to bridge the gap between gallery and theatre, and to fill the empty months of winter.

Taking place on Thursday 27 February 2020, 6-10pm at Manchester's NIAMOS, we see it as an informal evening of durational, small capacity and intervention based work.

Our twentieth Emergency takes place on Saturday 21 September, 12noon-10pm.  This year it's a little bit different as it takes place in two locations: daytime (12-5pm approx) in Manchester's NIAMOS; and evening (5-10pm approx) in Z-arts (incl. STUN Studio).

Artists working in live art and contemporary performance are invited to submit proposals of short pieces of work, works-in-progress, or extracts of longer works for inclusion in this event. 

For daytime work at NIAMOS we are looking for durational, performance installation, intervention and limited capacity and 1-2-1 work.  Opened in 1902 and formerly a theatre, cinema, BBC recording studio and church, NIAMOS is now being run by a co-operative as a holistic well-being space. Please note, whilst very atmospheric, it is in significant state of disrepair, and a site-specific approach might be best taken when thinking about work for it.  Wherever possible work should be low tech using domestic or battery powered equipment. Access is challenging. 

We are particularly looking for a bigger durational piece that might work for the NIAMOS main auditorium/stage area (see info attached) and recognise this might need more resources.  If you have an idea for this, please get in touch to discuss. 

For evening work at Z-arts/STUN we are looking for short (20 min max) show-type work.

As this seems to be a recurrent question: whilst we don't encourage it, you are permitted to submit more than one proposal but it is unlikely that more than one would be successful from a single artist/group.

In a one day, three venue, forty piece marathon of all that's bold, bizarre, left-field and live, Emergency 2012 hurtles into view on Saturday 13 October and here's a sneak preview of the list of participating artists:

Keep checking back here for a steady drip feed of titbits from Manchester's 13th marathon of the bizarre, the beautiful and the bold. Popping up in three venues - BLANKSPACE, Castlefield Gallery and Z-arts, this year's Emergency features nearly 40 free pieces of live work.

Call for proposals - now closed

Terrifyingly It's that time again and no sooner has the sun set on Hazard than Emergency pops its head over the horizon!  We're losing count, but we think it's the 13th Manchester outing for this marathon of art and bizarreness - taking place as part of the Manchester Weekender on Saturday 13 October. The 13th Emergency on the 13th... are we tempting fate?

Now things are more settled, we've lost the 'accommodation' moniker - but have gained a venue or two! For the first time, we become a proper, multi-sited micro-festival - with three venues: two whole galleries and a theatre! All within walking distance, we're trying to coin a catchy name for the M15 triangle they cover but haven't come up with anything great yet!

Divided into a daytime of largely interaction, intervention, one on ones and durational performance; and an evening of more show-type work we are delighted to be in:

Daytime:  BLANKSPACE (M15 6AW) and Castlefield Gallery (M15 4GB)

Evening:  Z-arts (M15 5ZA)

With a whole range of spaces to fill - and the journey between spaces to think about too - what we now need is a lots of great work! So...

Artists working in live art, contemporary performance, time-based media and interdisciplinary arts are invited to submit proposals of short pieces of work, works in progress or extracts of longer works for inclusion in this event. Proposals are also encouraged for durational, one to one and limited capacity work and performance installation and works which inhabit the journey between the spaces.

The event’s objectives are to be: 

• a free public micro-festival;
• an opportunity for artists to meet, show and peer review work;
• a selection event for a number of small Works Ahead commissions to be developed & supported by hÅb;

Work can be in any relevant artform/medium, though some live presence is desirable. 

Spaces available comprise: 

• Daytime – two gallery spaces and a series of unusual spaces best suited to intimate work.
• Evening – a black-box theatre (220 capacity); a partially equipped studio (capacity 70) suitable for lecture-performance type work ; a café-bar with stage suitable for intervention and cabaret.

Show-type work should be 20 minutes max in duration, low tech and suitable for quick turnarounds, self-supporting in terms of props/set/equipment and specialised technology.

Proposals are also strongly encouraged for durational, one to one and limited capacity work; performance installation and intervention-based works in and around the spaces and on the journey between BLANKSPACE and Castlefield Gallery

Emergency cannot pay fees or expenses (though we do feed you quite well!)

Final selection will be by a panel consisting of Tamsin Drury and John Franklin of hÅb, John Leyland of Blank Media Collective and Clarissa Corfe of Castlefield Gallery on the basis of suitability to the artistic parameters of hÅb/Blank Media Collective/Castlefield Gallery, and technical and logistical feasibility.

Special Call: We are, additionally, looking for a durational piece, within fixed criteria, for the Main Exhibition Space at BLANKSPACE, for which there is a budget of £250.

In addition to the main call for proposals above, we are looking for one durational piece, working within specific criteria, to occupy the Main Exhibition Space, upstairs at BLANKSPACE. We realise that the criteria are a big challenge and there is therefore a budget of £250 available for this work.

This is a challenging space – as it is surrounded by alcoves, in which there will be small performances and interactions taking place, with no sound baffling.  

Sound sensitivity is therefore crucial.

The piece we are looking for must be:

• Durational
• For a group audience that can come and go 
• Able to co-exist with other pieces – so neither loud, nor overly sensitive to external noise spill.
